What is the Webster Technique?
Developed by Dr. Larry Webster, the Webster technique is a safe, gentle chiropractic technique that helps bring a pregnant woman’s pelvic bones back into alignment. Any imbalance of the pelvis may lead to decreased mobility and increased pain, complicating the birthing process.

Why would Someone seek this care?
A pregnant woman’s body experiences a great amount of stress, physically, nutritionally, and emotionally. These stresses can lead her to experience physical pain, such as back, pelvis, and body pain, but it can also result in misalignment of the baby. It isn’t unusual for the baby to be in a misaligned position, we call breech during much of the gestation, but if the baby is misaligned after week 36, it can become a problem.

How does it work?
To understand the effectiveness of this technique, let’s take a closer look at the uterus. The uterus is nestled inside the pelvic basin, between the hip bones. A set of ligaments attaches the uterus to the abdominal wall as well as the sacrum (also known as the tailbone).
If the sacrum and pelvic bones are out of alignment, they will pull on those ligaments, creating what Dr. Webster called “intrauterine constraint”. This tension within the uterus creates a more cramped environment, preventing the baby from being able to move freely.

Using the Webster Technique, chiropractors can remove this tension by re-aligning the joints and treating tightness in the muscles and ligaments. Once the intrauterine constraint is relieved, the mother’s body can function optimally, allowing the baby the space to move or turn as needed.
This technique does not ensure turning a breech baby. It does not infringe upon any obstetric-like practices as the chiropractor is not treating the fetus, and any treatment of the fetus is outside the scope of chiropractic practices. With this technique, we are caring for the mother and her pelvic positioning by addressing the bones, muscles, and ligaments involved. In doing so, the orientation of the mother’s pelvis may be optimal so that the baby can position itself properly for birth.
