At Holistic Health & Chiropractic of Frankfort, we provide expert chiropractic care for back pain, sciatica, holistic healing and more. The most basic purpose of chiropractic care is to maintain proper alignment and balance in the body (musculoskeletal system) and realign it when joints become misaligned, restricted, or stuck.
How do joints become misaligned?
Common Causes of Joint Misalignment
Through chemical stress
- Think of toxins like additives, preservatives, refined sugar, alcohol, tobacco
- As well as caffeine and medications- these chemicals can act like toxins to the system and cause misalignment.
Through emotional stress
- Stress from work, relationships and negative thoughts can manifest in physical ways and complicate healing.
- Anger and fear, worry and guilt, financial, work, school stress can cause an overload to the nervous system resulting in physical pain.
Through physical stress
- Trauma from car accidents, slips or falls.
- Prolonged poor posture like sitting in front of computers for untold hours.
- New sports injuries or even old sports injuries that did not heal properly.
Chiropractic Adjustment
Our Chiropractic Care Techniques
Subluxations are corrected by a chiropractic adjustment which is a gentle and precise thrust, or push, usually performed by hand on the joint that is subluxated. Although you may hear a click or pop, the chiropractor is not cracking bones but releasing the pressure from the joint space thereby realigning the bones.
In some instances, an instrument called an activator, which looks like a clicker, is used instead of manual adjustment.
For people who suffer from lower back pain due to lumbar disc bulges or herniations, we use a very specialized table to help decompress the bulging disc. This method called flexion/distraction is gentle and very effective. So effective, in fact, that we have had many people who were told they needed surgery or even scheduled for surgery get such great results that they never needed to go under the knife.
Conservative Treatment
chiropractic & physical therapy
Physical therapy and chiropractic care are both forms of conservative treatment aimed at improving musculoskeletal health and function, but they have different approaches and methodologies. However, they can complement each other in certain cases and may be integrated into a comprehensive treatment plan for certain conditions. Here's how they relate:
Focus of Treatment:
- Chiropractic care primarily focuses on spinal alignment and joint manipulation to address misalignments (subluxations) and improve nervous system function. Chiropractors use hands-on adjustments and may also incorporate soft tissue techniques.
- Physical therapy, on the other hand, emphasizes rehabilitation and functional improvement through exercises, manual therapy, and modalities such as heat, ice, ultrasound, and electrical stimulation. Physical therapists work to restore mobility, strength, and flexibility, often targeting specific muscles and movement patterns.
Collaboration and Integration:
- In some cases, chiropractors and physical therapists may collaborate to provide comprehensive care. For example, a patient with low back pain might receive chiropractic adjustments to address spinal misalignments, followed by physical therapy to strengthen supporting muscles and improve posture.
- Integrating both chiropractic care and physical therapy can offer a holistic approach to managing musculoskeletal conditions, addressing both structural issues and functional limitations.
Patient-Centered Care:
- The choice between chiropractic care and physical therapy often depends on the individual patient’s needs, preferences, and the nature of their condition. Some patients may benefit more from one approach over the other, while others may find a combination of both to be most effective.
- Both chiropractors and physical therapists prioritize patient education and empowerment, providing guidance on self-care strategies, ergonomic modifications, and exercises to support recovery and prevent future problems.
Referrals and Communication:
- Chiropractors and physical therapists may refer patients to each other when appropriate, recognizing the value of multidisciplinary care in achieving optimal outcomes.
- Open communication between chiropractors, physical therapists, and other healthcare providers is important for coordinating care and ensuring that the patient’s treatment plan is cohesive and aligned with their goals.
Overall, while chiropractic care and physical therapy have distinct approaches, they can complement each other effectively in certain cases, offering patients a comprehensive and integrated approach to managing musculoskeletal conditions and promoting overall wellness.
Frequently Asked Questions
During your first chiropractic visit, you can expect a comprehensive assessment of your musculoskeletal health, including a discussion of your medical history and current symptoms. The chiropractor will likely conduct a physical examination, potentially including diagnostic tests like X-rays if necessary. If appropriate, they may perform chiropractic adjustments to address any misalignments or joint dysfunctions. Open communication with your chiropractor is encouraged throughout the process.
Safe enough for a baby! Yes, Dr. Heyer was adjusted when he was only 5 days old. His mother took him to her chiropractor so he could be adjusted. That’s a big head coming out of a small hole and the torque and pressure can misalign the baby’s bones, as well as the mothers.
Once you understand the basic concept, that bones and joints can misalign, you’ll understand there are many conditions that chiropractic care can help.
Yes of course, chiropractic can help lower back pain, thoracic and neck pain, shoulder, elbow, and wrist issues. As well as hip, knee, and feet issues. Dr. Heyer spends almost as much time adjusting and treating extremities as he does spinal issues.
It depends on the patient’s problem and goal. Most chiropractic adjustments will take between 5 and 10 minutes. Many individuals will receive therapies such as ultrasound and electric muscle stimulation. While others will have electroacupuncture performed after their correction. And others will be going through an active rehabilitative process to improve their core strength and flexibility. A person can expect to be in and out of the office in about 30 minutes.
No, you do not. For most people, they can call and schedule with us directly. The only instance that you would need an MD referral is if you had HMO insurance, however, we do not participate in with any HMO’s. In that case, we would suggest joining our discount medical plan to help make getting care more affordable.
Most insurances have some coverage for care. Our amazing assistant will contact your insurance company to verify benefits. And for those who do not have insurance cover or their policy covers very little, we have a discount medical plan you can join that makes the fees easily within reach.
Because Dr. Heyer will be assessing you and your whole-body range of motion, orthopedic tests and such, wearing comfortable, loose clothing would be best.
For the most part, no. People find them very relaxing once they become familiar with the process. And even more so once they start to experience pain relief. For those individuals who would prefer to not have a manual correction, we do use an Activator and our adjusting tables are designed to aid in the correction process.
