What is neck pain?
Neck pain is a nagging ailment that affects everyone at some time. In fact, approximately 80% of people experience neck pain during their lifetime, and 20% to 50% deal with it annually, according to Dr. Frank Pedlow, an orthopedic spine surgeon at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. May 10, 2016
The neck, also called the cervical spine, begins at the base of the skull and contains seven small vertebrae. The cervical spine supports the full weight of your head which is on average about 12 pounds. While the cervical spine can move your head in nearly every direction, this flexibility makes the neck very susceptible to pain and injury.
What are the types of neck pain?
The number one cause of neck pain is poor posture. Poor posture (the way your body is positioned when standing or sitting) can be due to sleeping in an awkward position, tension in your muscles, or even from an injury like whiplash that occurred from a car accident either recently or years ago. These are just some of the contributing factors.
But there’s something deeper and even more sinister at the root cause of neck pain that the medical and even the general community do not know about, it’s called subluxation.
Subluxation is a technical term chiropractors use to describe a joint that is misaligned or even locked in place. This can cause low grade aches or discomfort all the way up to sharp pain often accompanied with radiating symptoms of numbness, tingling or burning sensations if severe enough.

What a Typical Chiropractic Visit Looks Like & How We Treat Neck Pain
Dr. Jon K. Heyer, D.C., the chiropractor at Holistic Health & Chiropractic of Frankfort focuses on addressing this underlying cause of neck pain, subluxation, and correcting it. He realizes many people have different goals; some want simple pain relief while others know that more work is needed to truly stabilize and restore normal function. Especially it their condition is long standing and chronic. In those cases, chiropractic is used together with physical modalities, therapies, exercises, and even electro-acupuncture.
Each patient is different, which means that each patient’s visit is different. The patient’s goals will determine the type of treatment plan that Dr. Jon K. Heyer puts together. A typical visit will consist of a cervical spine adjustment. This may be done manually or with a tool called an activator.
A normal neck should look like a banana when looking at the side (lateral view) on X-ray. This curve provides proper spacing between the joints and acts like a shock absorber for the weight of your head.
If your neck has lost that curve, straightened, or even reversed forward, you will likely be experiencing pain due to the facets (joints of the vertebra) being locked up and malpositioned. This is very common to due things like whiplash from car accidents, other traumatic injuries and even something as benign as prolonged bad posture as in text neck.
A great technique to assist chiropractic in restoring your neck curve is what we call traction. We have several different methods to help decompress the spaces/discs in your neck and help to restore the neck curvature you may have lost. One method uses a wedge we have a person lay their neck over. A second method uses a harness and pulley system and a third uses a special device attached to the wall.
